Germany Gross to Net Salary Calculator 2026
A German salary offer is usually quoted gross. The amount reaching your bank account depends on wage tax, tax class and four main employee insurance contributions.

From gross salary to taxable income
Payroll first calculates social-insurance contributions up to their respective ceilings. Pension and unemployment use one ceiling; health and long-term care use another. Deductible employment and insurance amounts then reduce taxable income.
German income tax is progressive rather than a flat percentage. The basic allowance protects the first part of taxable income, while the marginal rate rises with income.
What the calculator includes
The Germany engine calculates the 2026 income-tax formula, solidarity surcharge where applicable, pension, unemployment, public health and long-term-care insurance. Tax class, church tax, state group, age, children and public or private health can refine the result.
The displayed number is an annualised estimate. Bonuses, company benefits, insurer-specific add-on rates and payroll rounding can change a real payslip.
How to compare an offer
Compare annual gross pay, not only the monthly figure: German offers can include bonuses or special payments. Then compare estimated annual net pay and divide by working hours if offers have different schedules.
For rent and everyday expenses, use a realistic local budget after calculating net pay, because housing costs vary much more by city than the national tax formula.
FAQ
Is gross salary before tax in Germany?
Yes. Gross salary is pay before employee tax and social-insurance deductions.
Does tax class change net salary?
It changes monthly withholding and can materially affect take-home pay, although the final annual assessment may reconcile part of the difference.
